The Royers Lock is an important shipping connection between the Scheldt and the Albert Canal. The lock is very important for the Port of Antwerp, one of the largest and busiest ports in Europe. The Royers Lock was opened in 1907. At the time, it was an important technological feat, designed to support the growing shipping activities in the Port of Antwerp. Over the years, the Royers Lock has been modernized and enlarged several times to accommodate larger ships and greater capacity.
For the continued growth and efficiency of the Port of Antwerp, the lock will be thoroughly renovated in the coming years. Work started in October 2021 and will take several years. The lock will be expanded into a high-performance barge lock that will handle modern barges smoothly and safely. It will be considerably longer (from 180 to 235 meters in length) and wider (from 22 to 36 meters) so that it can lock larger barges efficiently and increase the transport volume to the Albert Canal.
Two cameras were installed to provide an overview image and view into the work site area. One of the cameras was mounted to a protected building in the harbor and will be removed after the completion of the works without any damage.
The Flemish Government wants to involve the public in the work with up-to-date visual material. Thus, on the project website you can not only view a monthly timelapse, but also open a livestream. This way you can watch the progress as if you were there yourself, without getting your shoes dirty! The C-SITE camera footage will also be played live on large screens in the visitor center near the Port House. Take a look at the site of the Flemish Government or drop by the visitor center.
